Receiver of the Pritzker Prize, 2009 and the RIBA Gold Medal, 2012.
Zumthor's architecture is based on the history of the place and phenomenology. Through careful consideration of the components of the project, he, as few others, manages to create an architectural atmosphere. An atmosphere that is unique to place and program and always highly present, harmonious and beautiful.
THERME VALS 1996
Therme Vals is a work full of contrast. Outside, it is hard, clad with local stones and submits to the beautiful landscape, discreetly built in the hillside and with grass on the roof. Like a big moss-clad stone. Inside you are surrounded by masses of stone, while roof with its cracks give the impression of hovering. The landscape outside is perfectly framed and emphasizes the magnificence of the place.
The project is the closest we have been to wearing architecture as a piece of well-fitting tailor-made clothes. We would recommend anyone to visit and bathe in this magical place.
